The Épée

The épée is the largest of the three blades. Target area, or the area of the body of which a hit can score, consists of the whole body, however, the head usually is not counted in bouting matches. This is probably because when set for épée, electronic scoring computers do not register when touching metal; if they did, every time a person hit their opponent's blade or bellguard, a scoring touch would show.
